Choosing the right plants for your home garden can feel a bit overwhelming—there are so many options at the local nursery, and every plant tag promises beautiful results. But how do you know what will actually thrive in your unique space?

First, take a look at your yard throughout the day. Notice which areas get full sun, partial shade, or stay mostly cool and shaded. Most plants have specific light preferences, and matching them to your garden’s microclimates is the first step to success. If a plant loves sun and you tuck it into a shady corner, it’s likely to struggle, no matter how much attention you give it.
